The Jews told Jesus they will stone Him for blasphemy not for the works. They understood the meaning of Son of God which is the image of the invisible God. The Messiah is Emmanuel the Christ, the Son of the Living God. For them Jesus was the son of Marie and Joseph.  When Paul had received the revelation, people were saying he was preaching a new doctrine, just like today many denominational preachers who are blinded by Trinity, Halloween,  Christmas, Valentine, Mother's day and all traditions thinking I am preaching a new gospel
